I've been thinking about it. I know the black keys are two in a row, then one is missing, then three in a row, and that pattern repeats. So for each group of seven white keys there are five black keys, for a total of twelve keys. Seven of those groups give us 84 keys.
Pretty sure the missing four keys would be on the right side of the board. I guess at most one of them would be black? So 5*7+1=36 black keys.
But I can't really visualize the right end of the board ending with just two white keys. Weird. I must be wrong.
edit: just realized I've been counting the wrong color all day (story of my life). So, 88-36=52 white keys.

I had the same idea, but I've forgotten what it looks like on the far end of the left and right sides of the keyboard. This is what I get for leaving a promising career as a concert pianist to pursue my dream of being a cowboy...
Anyway, knowing it's 5 black keys to every 7 white within each octave (not counting the eighth) and a total of 88 keys altogether allows me to come up with (hopefully) a good estimate.
Holy cow, I just noticed the last part of your post. 52 white keys was my estimate!
