My Father told two things you should try and stay away from is talk about Religion or Politics. It is a no win situation. People will always believe what they are going to believe, not matter what argument is presented.

I can't say that I view karma as religion, and in case some believe karma is a real thing, I was curious about the 'rules'.

If you're talking proper Hindu karma, then I think it only really takes effect when one life ends and another one begins. (In other words, karma is part of the reincarnation process).

Reincarnation is the rebirth of the 'same soul' as it makes it's journey towards enlightenment. Therefore it is the same soul paying the price for bad karma it accrued in the previous life.
