This must be a first: Carlsen loses on time to Topalov in a dead drawn position in the first round.

Yes, he came in late, missed the announcement by the TD of the time controls, and then forfeited because he thought he had earned another 15 minutes which did not exist.

Rd. 2: Carlsen loses again, this time to Caruana, who outplays the champ from the White side of a Berlin Lopez.

Fabiano must have enjoyed this win, as he lost the last 2 times he played Carlsen.

Nakamura beat Caruana today. Giri's lone king and knight somehow held off Carlsen's 3 connected pawns for a draw.

nah its difficult to understand what has transpired, in the game against Anand he needed to go for a win and well it didn't work out and he had a winning position against Anish Girly (who is always bitchin about something)

Carlsen finally won(vs.Grischuk), but Topalov beat Hammer and has 4.5/5, a point ahead of Nakamura, who drew Anand.

Topalov's luck continued today, as Hammer gifts him the game in a drawn position!

    White to move:

Hammer played Kc6?? This drops the f and g pawns by force (after Ke6), and the game is lost.
Perhaps it was the 6 hours of play that exhausted him?

Topalov now clearly leading, but will his luck run out?

Interestingly enough, as a side note, Toppy said in his post-game interview that he wasn't too bothered about the candidates tournament, and qualifying for the world championship doesn't seem to be on his wish-list... some fighter he is, huh.

Its difficult to know what Hammer was thinking, fatigue perhaps, lack of concentration or playing to fast. Grischuck also played a very dubious move in his game also,

...exf4? which allowed Qxe8 Bxe8 and ....Bxf7 and the bishop cannot be touched and the black king will have difficulty coming into the game after the bishop retreats to g6

Topalov won again, giving him 5.5/6, 1.5 points ahead of Nakamura, who drew in 95(!)moves against Carlsen.
