A blog that started off by a coincidence on Rook and Knight endings.

With of course the usual RHP shambles. This one is a classic.

This spins (a pun ) onto Windmills with More cock up's
(some good play in there as well.)

One of my recent cock up's with the windmill theme.

Finishing with White getting back rank mated by a Rook.

    Like this?

    No Like this....

    ....and in only 10 moves.

And of course Michael Adams spot.

    Blog 4

    (thank You Moonbus.)

I have a hook screwed into the ceiling of my study.
In the corner is a long piece of sturdy rope and a chair.

After seeing that game I moved the chair under the hook and
was tying the rope to the hook when Monnbus's PM arrived.

That was close. I promise never to look at RHP Rook v Knight endings again.

I am right about the number of times it crops up in games when you
compare it with the classic 'must know' how to mate with two Bishops.

    RHP R v N = 787 games.
    RHP 2 BB's v a Lone King = 122 games.

    OTB DB R v N = 1138 games
    OTB DB 2 BB's v a Lone King =93 games.

You must know how to draw this with the Knight
and spot the winning chances when you have the Rook

The chances are you will need to.

Windmills are always fun to watch, but I've never managed to create (or spot!) one in my own games. And even if I had... in that first windmill example, I'm quite sure that I'd have continued with 8.Rd7, going on to manage to lose with Q+R+B against 2R, instead of going in for the kill as in the game.

Hi GreenPawn, the nice thing about K+B+B v K is that it's easy. Once one's got the basic idea of driving the king to a corner then the actual checkmate can be found over the board. The one to ignore is K+N+B v K, which I've had once in a pub game - by luck I'd recently learnt how to do it and managed it in the five minutes left despite the beer. The basic difference between the two endings is that if faced with K+B+B v K I could do it now, I'm not confident that I could do the K+B+N v K ending.

I've never had had either K + B + B or K + B + N here and I've had K + N v K + R once, against Marco Krale back in 2005 (although I was slack about downloading my games for a while so I might have missed one, even so this is one game in fifteen hundred), so really I don't think any of them are particularly likely.

According to EGTB I lost the game a couple of times before I was offered a draw:

Edit: A closer look at the Endgame Tablebase output tells me the wins take 30 and 25 moves respectively, so not easy to see.

Thank you again, Greenpawn, for your efforts to educate us.

    Hi Byedidia,

I looked to see to if any player with the lone Rook
v a lone Knight had walked into this...

    Surprisingly no.

Let me know if the hook ever starts to look appealing again. I have a couple more suggestions to occupy your brain.
