I encountered a new tactical motif I've never seen before. Black to move.

After 1 ... Nxg4, white cannot take back because the pawn is busy blocking the black pawn on f4. The pawn is not pinned... What is it?

That would be a discovered fork, I guess. It's a neat tactic. πŸ™‚

It's not a discovered fork because a discovery should be made by your own piece.

I'd call it a form of deflection.

Well then, how about calling it a simple blunder?

I've always been partial to the term 'bad thing!' for tactics like these. Highly specific.

Yes! You are right. It looks different than most clearance sacs but that's what it is.

"Clearance sacrifice" is a nice term, but this isn't such a case since the N on g4 will not be taken/sacrificed. After Nxg4, the N is poison. Why it's poison is rather clever, yes.

A sacrifice needn't be accepted in order to qualify.
It really isn't a true sacrifice, as the benefit of the tactic is clearly evident to nearly any player. Except for duffers like me in blitz or when I am not focused. πŸ™‚
    Maybe Poisoned Clearance Sale. πŸ™‚

Every time I have wanted to post on this thread, ChessPraxis said it first. We've clearly read the same books!

    LOL
I think you got more out of them though Paul. πŸ™‚
"The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" influences my classification of sacs.

I would go with "Attempted Clearance Pseudo-Sacrifice".

How about "The Billy Bob?" I don't think that's been used in chess terminology.
