I've just been told that Andrew Whiteley, the British International Master, has died.

He was one of the strongest players in the London League when I used to play in it in the 1980s. However he did once lose a game in six moves to a friend of mine:

Andrew passed away yesterday, I understand, although he had not been well for a while.

Andrew had been a member of Kings Head in London for a long time. I remember seeing him playing for them both in the London League and the 4NCL. He continued playing for them as late as May at the annual Capelle trip, a trip he frequently went on.

He was not just a strong player but also a strong organiser to name but one of his other skills. I was fortunate to meet him several times. I only played him once, in a Kings Head blitz event, the result being somewhat as messy as the game.

If there are any old Kings Head, or London, players on here who would like further details please PM me.

I played Andrew in 77 or 78. I was Black, a Benko, I lost. I recall it was
a 5 rounder, I finished on 2 pts but one of the wins won me the brilliancy prize.

Here is a good game by Andrew.

There's a couple of pictures of Andrew from the 2014 Cappelle trip here:

I remember him being a regular pipe smoker, back in the days when smoking at the board was allowed, which I guess explains the mouth cancer.

Was that a regular tournament time game or was it blitz?

Some databases say that this game was from the 1973 British Championships (held at Eastbourne). I can certainly believe that, it's a high quality, double-edged game.
