    Of whom was Capablanca speaking?

Many of you will no doubt know but I had never heard of him. 😞

His Wiki bio is very good.

If someone had posted the following game saying Carlsen
was White and ground out a win I would believe them.

Mir Sultan Khan - Capablanca, Hastings 1930/31

Ah the Sultan, who was neither a Mir, nor a Sultan but a humble villager from the Punjab, what a legend man!

What's a 'Mir'? So he was a mir villager then?

A Mir is a title like a ruler, from Persian, you find the Arabic form, Amir, meaning 'prince'. I find the Sultans style is stonewall like, he prefers positions with closed centers and goes in for pawn storms. Its thought this is a consequence of the original form of the game which he played where pawns are only allowed to move a single square.
